| “Health is powerfully affected by social position... it is not the richest countries that have the best health, but the most egalitarian.”
– Richard G. Wilkinson, Unhealthy Societies: The Afflictions of Inequality
The United States spends more per capita on healthcare than any other developed nation in the world. At the same time, the World Health Organization ranks our healthcare system number 72 in the world – below all wealthy industrialized countries and below many poorer, less industrialized countries. Currently, over 40 million people in the United States have no health insurance.
While it is little surprise that poor people in the United States bear the brunt of many health disparities, the Self Reliance Foundation subscribes to public health theory which holds that our entire country cannot enjoy the best possible health until all members of our society are receiving the health and wellness information and services they need. SRF’s health campaigns seek not only to raise awareness of common health conditions but, also, via our help-line, to connect audiences to the local health resources they need. Just a few of our many health campaigns have included:
- HIV/AIDS Prevention and HIV Vaccine Awareness
- Human Genome Project
- Mental Health
- Nutrition and Obesity: The Gift of Health (El Regalo de Salud)
- Physical Fitness: The VERB Campaign
- Reproductive Health
- Understanding Your Body (Conociendo Tu Cuerpo)
