| "The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science.”
– Albert Einstein
From modest beginnings, the Self Reliance Foundation’s science education projects have developed into some of our most broad scale and beautiful programs. In 1979, our founder and chairman, Jeff Kline, borrowed $15,000 from his mother to create a documentary film, Sun Dried Foods, which not only explained how rural New Mexicans traditionally preserve vegetables, meats and wild herbs and fruits, but also encouraged audiences to sell these high-value specialty products so that they could maintain their traditional lands in the face of encroaching modernization.
Today, the Self Reliance Foundation also spearheads the Celebrate Science (Celebra la Ciencia) initiative, the country’s largest bilingual informal science outreach campaign which, through numerous partnerships with museums and educators, brings fun-filled science activities to public street festivals at six sites across the country. We have also founded the Hispanic Science News Service, whereby we provide brief science news stories, in Spanish, to ethnic media outlets across the country.
