With
its Celebra la Ciencia (Celebrate Science) program, the Self
Reliance Foundation is encouraging Hispanic Americans to learn about
science in fun, non-formal settings. Made possible in part through
a grant from the National Science Foundation, Celebra
la Ciencia organizes
hands-on, educational science exhibits at local Latino community
festivals across the country. At our festivals, visitors can excavate
fossil shark's teeth, create slime, take part in water balloon experiments,
or learn about everything from pendulums to electronic circuit boards.

Most
importantly, our exhibits encourage parents and children to take
part in the learning process together. Three decades of education
research have confirmed that parental involvement is the strongest
factor in determining a child's success in school. And children
with involved parents are more likely to continue their education.
