Hispanics are the fastest growing and youngest segment of the U.S. population. And, according to the most recent Census data they now comprise the largest minority group in the U.S. The number of Hispanic children has increased faster than that of any other racial and ethnic group, growing from nine percent of the child population in 1980 to 16 percent in 1999. By 2020, it is projected that more than 1 in 5 children in the United States will be of Hispanic origin (U.S. Census Bureau). The Department of Health and Human Services reports that 40 percent of all Hispanic children in the United States live in poverty - the highest level for all minority groups.

Providing public information for and about this growing demographic group is vital as we prepare for our country's future. To this end, the Self Reliance Foundation is partnering with the National Latino Children's Institute to develop innovative, educational programming to bring essential information to parents and caretakers about issues and services that impact the welfare of their children.

In 2000, SRF produced over 75 radio capsules on a wide range of child development topics including immunizations, insurance, nutrition, asthma, prenatal care, and early childhood education. Interested listeners were further assisted by our National Hispanic Resource Helpline which provided referrals to local resources such as the Head Start and the CHIP insurance programs.
