EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Self Reliance Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit educational organization primarily serving the U.S. Hispanic community, is recruiting an Executive Director.

The Self Reliance Foundation/Acceso Hispano (SRF) works to empower Hispanics by disseminating practical information and facilitating access to community-based services. The organization's goal is to inform and inspire Latinos to take advantage of opportunities for personal and community empowerment in such areas as science, health, the environment, social justice, and quality of life issues. The mission is carried out through Spanish-language educational media and outreach initiatives. Funding comes primarily from federal government and private foundation grants. The organization has ten full and part-time staff with an annual operating budget of approximately $2 million

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors

OPPORTUNITIES:

· Leverage existing relationships with the Hispanic Communications Network, other Hispanic serving media and organizations to more effectively reach millions of Hispanics at their homes, places of work, cars and festivals.

· Create and maintain active partnerships and coalitions with thousands of grassroots community based and with major national organizations who would like to better serve the U.S. Hispanic population.

· Provide Hispanic parents with the knowledge and tools to more effectively help their children succeed in school and apply to and graduate from universities.

· Recruit and promote Hispanic role models to inspire Hispanic youth to set goals of becoming leaders in science, health care, environmental protection, and community service.

· Reduce Hispanic gang participation, high school drop out rates, teen pregnancy, domestic violence and alcohol and drug abuse.

· Educate Hispanic families about preventative health practices including nutrition and physical activity, alternative medicine practices; and increase their access to health care and the nation’s system of community based health clinics.

· Increase Hispanic home ownership and entrepreneurship.

· Build upon existing fellowship programs at universities nationwide to give bilingual college students hands-on experience serving the community via the Foundation’s access to national media and the Foundation’s Information and Referral systems.

· Develop the Foundation’s Hispanic Health and Science Newswire Service into a leading source of information and inspiration for Hispanics in the U.S. and Latin America.

· Create and document successful case histories of social marketing using the Foundation’s infrastructure and alliances.

· Build an excited and empowered team of employees, consultants and stake holders who share a common vision and will do whatever is needed to support each other in creating a major and measurable impact on society.

CURRENT PROJECTS:

· The Foundation currently administers a variety of federal and private grants to use media and festivals to promote health and science education and to reduce Hispanic involvement in gangs.

FUTURE PROJECTS:

· The Foundation is also interested in building upon relationships it has in Israel and Palestine to assist media that promote peace in the middle east.

RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to:
· Implementation and objective evaluation of all grant-funded programs to insure maximum benefit to the public being served.
· Organizational compliance with all federal guidelines for grant administration, including meeting federal A-133 audit compliance.
· Managing the organization to achieve positive cash flow and to build cash reserves.
· Hiring and management of staff to ensure high quality execution of all grants.
· Manage income generation, proposal development and solicitation of major funders.
· Maintenance of transparent, accurate and timely records of all projects, materials, budgets, grant work, etc.

REQUIREMENTS:
Qualified candidates should have:
· A minimum of three years management preferably of a non-profit organization or the Corporate Social Responsibility activities of a commercial entity. Candidates with equivalent experience in a small (10-50 person) business, preferably public relations, social marketing or a similar business will also be considered
· Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills
· College degree required. MBA or JD preferred.
· Strong background in the social sciences, communications, or business administration.
· Proven ability to manage budgets
· Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
· Proven ability to work successfully with teams, handling multiple projects and meeting tight deadlines under pressure
· Demonstrated critical thinking and problem solving abilities

CONTROLLER

The mission is carried out through Spanish-language educational media and outreach initiatives. The organization is funded primarily through federal and private foundation grants. The organization has ten full time and a varying number of part-time staff, with an annual operating budget is approximately $1.5 million.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Manage the routine accounting functions in accordance with GAAP, including the general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, purchasing, payroll, bank reconciliations, audit insurance and tax reports.
· Prepare interim and annual financial statements, cash flow statements, budgets and tax reports.
Implement and recommend fiscal policies, procedures and controls.
· Administer employee benefits programs.
· Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and cash flow projections.
· Manage and control organizational expenditure within approved budgets.
Perform month-end close process; issue pre-determined financial reporting package.
· Serves as part of the senior mgmt team, working closely with the Executive Director, Board, Senior Managers and outside Auditors.
· Advises the Board and senior management on delivering positive program impacts within or below budget and generating a cash reserve.
· Supervise the monitoring of all contracts to ensure compliance with fiscal and programmatic reporting.
· Develop budgets for proposed grant-funded projects, with input from program staff.
· Supervises financial aspects of organization's sub-contracts with Hispanic media organizations.
· Provide support to project staff in the preparation of periodic reports to funding sources, which include the reporting of outstanding funding receivables, on a grant-by-grant basis.
· Ensure the maintenance of effective internal controls to assure safeguarding of assets and reliability of financial statements.
· Ensure compliance with any and all financial and contract reporting requirements for private or public funding, licensing, or regulatory agencies.
· Ensures complete and up-to-date operating procedures for all accounting and financial controls.
· Reviews all receipts and disbursements, ascertains correct account distribution and ensuring all support documentation is accurate and in order.
·
Qualifications:

· Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, with CPA preferred.
· Four years' experience in accounting.
· Excellent verbal, written, communication, interpersonal and computer skills.
Non-Profit experience strongly preferred, including experience in federal grants administration funding accounting, and A-133 audits.
· Experience in using Quickbooks and other accounting and project management software.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

Imagine and create exciting new projects that help underserved communities get access to information and assistance in the fields of health, education, environment, technology, civil rights, women’s rights, economic opportunity, and more.

Primary Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
•Design and develop new projects to inform, educate and inspire Hispanics.
•Develop funding strategies and write the proposals to fund them.
•Once funded, provide oversight and direction to insure the projects are implemented in accordance with Project Development Officer’s vision.
•Oversee implementation staff to insure the projects really do make a difference in the lives of the target population.
•Oversee evaluation components- assist in supervising implementation strategies.
•Report to senior management on project progress.
•Write Quarterly and final progress reports.
•Maintain contact with funders to facilitate continued funding for multi-year projects.

Exciting Internship Opportunities Available!

PUBLIC RELATIONS - MARKETING - COMMUNICATIONS – RESEARCH - U.S. LATIN AMERICAN MARKET

Would you like to make a difference for Latinos in the U.S.? An internship with Self Reliance Foundation (SRF) and Hispanic Radio Network (HRN) provides you with hands-on experience in broadcast radio and print media, media relations, government relations, project research and development, community outreach, web development and business operations. This is your opportunity to apply your academic learning in a dynamic, fast-paced, professional environment, where you can put your ideas to work. We are looking for students who are fluent in Spanish or English and who are interested in empowering the U.S. Hispanic community.


Hispanic Radio Network (HRN) is the largest producer and distributor of educational Spanish radio and print information in the United States. The Self Reliance Foundation works with HRN to develop community outreach projects for listeners and readers who need access to non-profit health, education, and other resources in their local communities. I. K-12 Project - Coordinator, Celebra la Ciencia (1 position) Assist in the development of strategy and implementation of a national science education K-12 Latino initiative. Assist in coordination of Latino festivals and events, development of publications, and development of marketing materials for special projects. Participate and learn about how the project is evaluated. Assist in research and development of workshops and presentations. Act as editor of a tabloid-sized bilingual publication called Family Science Page.

II. Media Relations Assistant (1 position, Spanish fluency required) Intern will acquire hands-on experience conducting public relations with print, radio and some television media nationwide and will learn how to obtain in-kind media coverage for Spanish-language educational and public interest programs and editorials.

III. Production Assistant (1 Position) Research topics for potential feature stories on weekly live inter-active radio programs. Assist in the weekly preparations for live international radio program. Contact guests for interviews and appearances on programs. Learn to research and write program questions, scripts, and articles for print. Create a reference guide for past show titles, guests for Bienvenidos a America, and a weekly radio program. Serve as assistant producer during the live radio shows.

Hours needed: 20/week, schedule is flexible but M-F a must!
