This
innovative collaborative between SRF and universities allows students
to contribute to the nation-wide network of resources and services
for the rapidly growing U.S. Hispanic community. Through these
partnerships, SRF has involved students from the University of
New Mexico, San Diego State University, Pepperdine University,
and the National Latino Research Center in National
Hispanic Resource Helpline. Bilingual students screen service
providers for SRF’s resource database, make follow-up calls to
people who were assisted by our Information and Referral (I&R)
Specialists, and perform community service locally.
SRF
fellows work on-site at their own universities, and participating
schools have the option of offering work-study funds and/or academic
credit to students for their work. And as SRF outreach services
expands, we hope to integrate more universities into the Student
Fellows Program.
In
the future, SRF’s Internet-based resource database will make its
Helpline services highly accessible to colleges and universities
located throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico. With the expansion
of this exemplary project, SRF’s National
Hispanic Resource Helpline will be able to respond
to the growing need for access to information and local services
among Hispanics in this country.
