What Is Service Learning?

Service learning is experiential learning; it combines community service with learning as it focuses both on reflective activity and on civic responsibility. Service learning engages students in organized community service activities whcih address local needs, while allowing students to develop academic skills, a sense of civic responsibility, and commitment to the community. 

Mission of SRF's Service Component

The mission of SRF’s service component is to

v     Encourage local outreach to Hispanic community service agencies.

v     Assist university students to develop academic skills, a sense of civic responsibility, and a commitment to the community.

v     Promote student’s life-long commitment to the civic community.

v     Add a local, hands-on component to students' more typical academic activities.

Benefits of Service for Participatin Students  

v     Real-world applications of classroom concepts.

v     Valuable experience for the resume.

v     Personal investment in the community outside the university.

v     The satisfaction of helping others and making a difference.

Benefits for Participating Universities

v     Improvement of "town and gown" relationships.

v     Fostering a sense of community responsibility among students.

v     Students involved in service learning scored significantly higher on four of ten evaluation measures in a study conducted by the National and Community Service Trust Act:  (1) engagement in school, (2) grades, (3) core-subject grade average (English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies), and (4) educational aspirations (e.g., wanting to graduate from a four-year college).
