“I
am so grateful to you for helping me find an organization
who would help us when my daughter ran away from home. My
wife and I needed an understanding person who could do more
for us than just file a report. Our daughter is home safely
now. It is so important for others to know that there is help
in their community. I never knew how many services were out
there until I called your helpline.”

The Self Reliance Foundation complements its social marketing campaigns with a national toll-free information and referral help-line. This valuable national resource links callers to Spanish-speaking, culturally competent service providers – after school programs, health clinics, adult literacy classes and more – in their local communities. The help-line is publicized through radio programming, newspaper columns and community festivals throughout the country.
After the first five years of our help-line’s operation, SRF commissioned an independent trend study and was pleased to learn that we were successfully helping those individuals most in need. Of the 32,000 calls to our call center in that time period:
45% had not earned a high school degree
34% reported that they were unable to speak English
36% told us that they only spoke “some” English
37% were laborers
17% were homemakers
